Not every job in our shop is a ground up restoration. Some of our favorite work is the small, thoughtful fixes that keep a classic truck useful on the road.
This 1951 Ford F1 is a good example. Mark walked us through a custom job on this truck, converting its original vacuum operated wiper system to electric wipers.
The problem with vacuum wipers
Many classic trucks and cars came from the factory with wipers that ran on engine vacuum. They work, but they have a reputation. When you press the throttle hard or climb a hill, vacuum drops and the wipers can slow down or stall, which is the last thing you want in a rainstorm.
An electric wiper motor gives steady, dependable wiping no matter what the engine is doing.

The catch, a 6 volt truck
Here is where it gets interesting. This Ford F1 still runs on its original 6 volt electrical system. The electric wiper system the owner wanted needs 12 volts.
Rather than rewire the entire truck or change its electrical system, the team installed an inline voltage converter that steps 6 volts up to 12 volts for the wipers. The truck stays 6 volt, the wipers get the power they need, and the vehicle keeps its original character.

A truck with a family story
This F1 was passed down through the owner’s family. That is a big reason the job mattered. A small upgrade like this keeps a family truck safer and more usable without taking away what makes it special.
It is also a good example of how we think about classic vehicles. The best solution is often the one that respects the original vehicle while solving a real problem.
